It's a Toyota Tercel (95) - at first they said it would cost over $600 for front and back. (This includes breaks pads and rotors too). When I said I wanted to get an estimate at another mechanic, the guy said "Oh, well... your back breaks really aren't too bad, so I could do just the front for $200".

I live in Tennessee now, where I have yet to find an honest mechanic - but when I live in New York, my mechanic always did front and back for $300.

Wow if he changed his mind that fast I would take my car to someone else. How can you trust someone who changes their tune so easy? Next time spend a few minutes talking to the shop ask lots of questions until you feel comfortable. Stuff like when the work is done can you show me the old parts? What brand parts do you use and why? What is the labor rate per hour? Call a local parts store and see if the can recommend a trust worthy shop. Ask friends or co-workers. This is you car and a large investment so always, always ask!!!!!!!!
$600 is way way to much should not be more that $200 tops.(unless of they are using solid gold parts)

I have worked at Midas in the past and for just a brake pad replacement it was like $50.You should really check around at different shops for better prices, some places will change your pads and turn your rotors, which means you don't have to buy new rotors. Back brakes very rarely need changed, unless you have a problem in the brake system on high miles,or your hard on them. I have changed my front brakes by myself (I now how) and I bought the parts at autozone for $30

it depends what exactly theyre replacing... "brakes" encompass more than pads and rotors... sounds like this mechanic is a scam artist if he's trying to fix what aint broke!.. if you have bad luck with local guys, go to a big chain (tuffy, discount tire, etc.)

i think you should buy the breaks your self maybe when you take your car to the mechanic it will be a little cheaper or find a friend who will put them on for you.[someone who knows about cars]
