The site isn't pretty but it has all the info you could possibly want to know about the character :)
From reading the books myself, I can tell you that they are written by Peter O'Donnell who started off writing them for a comic strip in 1963 - some of these have since been published in graphic novel format. Following their success he then turned to writing Modesty Blaise novels. The first one is called 'Modesty Blaise' and was published in 1965.
O'Donnell wrote 13 modesty Blaise books in total. There are also two movies based on the character. 'Modesty Blaise' which came out in 1966 and 'My name is modesty' which was released in 2004.
