I bought this Celeron machine- 2nd hand. And I didn't get the driver CDs with it. I've installed Win XP. This helped in loading all the device drivers properly, except for the sound card (it's onboard). The machine had Win 98 previously. And the sound card was working there perfectly. It was lost after I installed XP. I opened the Device Manager and found out that the sound card is showing up there.... something like AC 97 Audio Device or whatever. I opened it and went to the driver page. There I found the option Update Driver. Clicking on to it- a wizard opened up. There after a few steps it asked if I want to download the driver from the net. I clicked Yes but then it said it couldn't find the driver (I had kept my internet connection active all the time). I don't know what to do next. Please help, I have very little computer knowledge. So, please be detailed.

Even though it shows in the Device Manager, whenever I try to open any media program, like Windows Media Player it says audio device is missing.

AC 97 is a very common on-board sound chip and Windows XP should have the drivers for it already. You say it is shows in the Device Manager? If it shows like other installed hardware with no yellow or red warning next to it your drivers are installed and you must have other problems.
All I can suggest is to open Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel and click on the Audio tab. There are drop down menus to choose which card to use for apps (when you have more than one card, usually). Make sure it shows up there and that it is selected as the audio source for playback.

You nees to know that if you installed a new os then you have to formatted you computer......then everything will lose including your sound card software..it will not installed automatically when you open your PC...
1) you can installed it on internet or
2) just wait until you get driver cd's from the person you buy the computer..

Best suggestion I can give is that Windows is pitiful when it comes to just about everying (Help, drivers updates, security, consistency, performance, etc.)
if the sound card is an built into the mother board then all you have to do is find the website for the mobo manufacture and find drivers for it.
if the sound card is external then find out the type and then find the manufacturers site for their drivers.
google is an excellent source of drivers that can be downloaded

Download the driver from Realtek, http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dlac97-2.aspx?lineid=5&famid=12&series=8&Software=True
Note the update driver is ONLY if you have already download the driver or ONLY if windows update has the driver, it is useless in most situations. It's not really an "automatic" updater.
