My fear is that Black Africa almost a;ways degenerates into kleptocracy. Corruption is rife. There is little real support for democracy. democracy African style inevitably ends up as a one party state. Even South Africa could easily go that way. Already there are disturbing signs of the ANC becoming corrupt. Zimnanwe points to a possible future for South Africa. Zimbabwe was obce not so long ago prosperous with everything to look forward to. But now under the dictatorship of the madman, Mugabe, it is poverty striken with super hyper inflation of c1000% pa. I don't accept the excuses that colonialism has sone this to Africa because it gasb't been the same in other parts of the former empire - just look at india and the Caribbean - both shining examples of functioning democracy and economic progress.

No there really is no hope and for various reasons -

Their host governments are totally inept they waste money time resources and commit criminal acts as a matter of good government

The enviroment is hostle to anything decent - the desert, disease etc.

The people are institutionlized peasants- they cant make or save any money nor do they think much past today and will infight swindle as well as murder each other if they differ from tribe , area or country.

AIDS

ISLAM

The oil companies want the minerals - preferably for free

If you know African history, you will know that it has always been a dark continent where life is cheap. Superstitians abound, witchcraft is rife and now we have Aids and Corruption. I remember a black woman telling me she wished the apartheid era was back because things were better run under the whites. And Thabo Mbeki's own brother said things were better under colonial rule.
I don't ever want white rule back but until Africans are educated enough to put the good of their country first, there will always be problems. But I am positive about it all. I think it will take a long time before there is enough employment to make crime a less viable option, AIDS is brought under control and people step into the first world.

Economically, there is no hope so long as the Western world continues to exploit the resources of Africa. We raped the continent during the colonial era and are continuing our exploitation.

Politically, well there are several stable states in Africa, South Africa being the most notable. All it needs for several countries to stabalise themselves politically. Free Democratic elections will aid the continent and eventually, stronger African nations may be able to aid their fellow Africans.

But everything seems long term...at the moment, Africa is still struggling.

Yes of course. Never give up.The struggle continues perpetually. The UK initiative last year and this years appointment of Bono and Geldof and team to push the process onwards is a great initiative.

I understand China is generating a lot of interest in Africa.

Large federations of the similar background neighbouring countries, is being formlated in East Africa, to copy the European EEC. That should put a check to corruption.
Also give a larger market of consumers and producers ,take interest in larger investments.

Many other factors are about to ensure change.

Not in this century.

Corruption is endemic, overwhelming and fully acceptable as a way of life.

Any business man will cheat you if he can and feel proud afterwards for getting the better of you.

Those who enter politics do so not out of any sense of purpose, but as a way to make money. It is another kind of business

Out of any money donated by the richer countries, 30% goes to the top politicians, 30% in bribes and 30% for arms and 10% to public works and the poor people. Increase in population takes care of that.

Don't blame the so-called west entirely! We've fought for our politics and wealth - I like our freedoms and lifestyle in the main. OK we're not perfect, but if Africa wants to be economically better off it damn well can be - there are enough resources there! As for politically, Europe, America, Australia... etc ... we've all gone through poverty and times punitive politics and no African nation came to our rescue (except by being there to exploit ;~) ).

Yes if they can get a government that isn't corrupt, one that cares for its people instead of feathering their own nest. the politicians are voted in saying what they will do for the people and then let those poor people down, where does it all end?
