Physical appearances make a large difference to how we interact with each other. Attractive people are at a great advantage over others, for reasons that are every bit as fair as those that give other advantages (e.g., sharing interests, having certain skills, etc.).
I think that we've made great strides towards more acceptance of physical disfigurations, so adults in general no longer have any excuse for deliberate mockery of disfigured persons. However, it is not at all realistic or fair to expect that unattractive people will be treated the same as attractive people. This is deeply ingrained - recent studies (source) show that even mothers favor their more attractive children.
It would probably be best if we were just a LOT more upfront about these biases. We only rarely admit that physical attractiveness gets people jobs and promotions and the like. We all seem to want to believe that we're "deeper" than that, which results in us making idiotic claims about how we aren't affected by looks (when in fact we invariably are).

Yes, I was thinking about asking a question like this as well.
Of course, there is an evolutionary incentive or proclivity to be attracted to the more visually appealing men and women of our species, so most of the time, we can't help relating to the more attractive people and ignoring or dismissing the less attractive or physically disfigured people.
We SHOULD accept people for who they are, regardless of how they look, because it's on the inside that counts the most, but the majority of humans never will, because our physical desires are strong, but our wills our weak.

I completely agree with this. I have always been a little heavier, I'm very athletic but I weigh a lot I have just never been a size zero and I'm glad. These people that are trying to look beautiful would be much more appealing if they would peel themselves away from the scales and the mirrors and begin to talk with people. Everyone would be happier there would be less hatred in the world. BUT this will never happen untill people accept themselves for who they are!!!!!

That would be wonderful, sweetie, but we live in a society that's based on the "perfect look". But as long as you know that people are people no matter what, and you accept folks for who they are regardless of what they look like physically, then you're doing the right thing. Be well, my dear.

Of course it would. I'd rather live in that world and have my son grow up in that world. Unfortunately there are a lot of naive people out there that are missing out on that point.

i agree. but most people judge you by your apperence and the way you present yourself. thats a part of life. and it will never change. i was always brought up to believe that true beauty is on the inside. and i have come to see that its true. remeber just because someone jdges you or any one else doesnt make them a better person it just means that they have insecurities of thier own .

Yea, but that won't happen unless everyone becomes blind. However, then, of course everyone will judge ppl by their voices or how they feel physically. There is always something to judge, unfortunately.
