You might be able to get an international plan from Verizon but it will likely be very expensive. Consider picking up a quad-band GSM phone instead and buying a prepaid SIM card once you get there. You can get a GSM phone fairly cheap in India, but maybe you can find one used before you go. Just make sure you get it unlocked first so that you can use competing provider SIM cards. Both T-Mobile and Cingular are on the GSM network (and perhaps others), so any of their phones will do. Just make sure you get it unlocked first. Do an internet search to find out the codes.

Unfortunately, Verizon is on the CDMA network and not the GSM network, so you cannot swap out the SIM card in Verizon phones. You will not be able to port over your USA phone number, but it will be much less expensive than Verizon's international service.

Here is an interesting website on the different options for using cellular phones abroad. You need to have a GSM phone for it to work. Contact Verizon, but also explore other options, because the roaming charges will be very high, something like $2.99 per minute.
