I'm not talking about bulking up, but becoming muscularly defined and very fit like a triathlete. It's infinitely better for your health than other things like wearing high heels, but none of my friends who are girls will work out with me stating that they don't want to look guyish, or something like that.
First of all that can't happen unless you do some serious weightlifting and consume a gazillion calories. Other wise you'll still look "womanly". I told my friends this, but they won't do it. However they'll cavil about their lack of fitness.
Obviously not all women are this way, but it seems to me that most women are far concerned with how they look than with how healthy they are. And will even do things that make them feel worse, as long as they think it will make them look better. Why is this?

First, no woman wears high heels for their "health", it's all about lookin' pretty for guys.... Second, women DO tend to look guyish when they define their muscles, esp, on their arms and shoulders. I've seen women who haven't really "bulked up" but they still look like mini men b/c their shoulders get a bit bigger/rounded out. ITA that women should do what's healthiest, but it really doesn't take a lot to do have that guyish look. It's a lot easier than you think. Women tend to focus on things like pilates or aerobics just to keep the muscles lean and long.
And PS - women who lift weights end up losing a LOT of breast mass. Can you understand why that might be a scary thought?

most girls do want to look healthy, whats wrong is the way they go by it. the way they do this is by developing eating disorders this is there answer for " looking healthy " . they dont realize being anorexic skinny is not a healthy look. But thank the lord almight that some actually use there brains and hit the gym. not to build muscles just to tone certain areas. big difference in those two. working out will not guarantee muscles unless you put that much intensity into it. a little work out tones you out

Women are scared of being 'too big', which we are all taught is a 'male' trait. ie, if a woman is 'too big' she may 'scare' a man away from approaching her.
Women are concerned with how we look because we have been taught that our appearance is the most important thing about us. We are told to adhere to female sex roles, but then called fussy and vain for doing so. If we step out of those roles, and gain muscle, avoid makeup and shaving etc, we are insulted.

most women do not want to look "mannish" as your friends pointed out. most women however do workout without developing their muscles. there are tons of machines that only make you tighter, not muscular. i go to the gym all the time, but i rarely lift weights probably because i've seen super muscular women and i dont like the way they look. part of being a women is competition. we want to look better than that other girl. and that makes people do whatever they can to look better. some however (like me) are not that crazy..lol
but the point is, that all women should workout enough to please themselves, not anyone else.

Yeah, your lady friends don't wanna be bulked out and all buff and competing in those musclewoman contests that are on ESPN from time to time.
They also don't want to lose their breasts to a mass of muscle.
It just looks gross.

Lack of enthusiasm. Seems to be just a lot more work to look good. They just accepted the way they look and refuse to change. Good for them!

No pain no gain! But I agree that in order for a woman to lose weight they have to excercise. Weight Traing will not make you lose weight it will bulk you up.

lifting weights on a regular basis will not bulk you up..... thas the misconception in ladies these days... if u lift weights u will NOT GET BULKY!!!!!!! u will achive a leaner more stronger mucsle mass.... me for example i luv having elegantly defined forearms, to me its sexy.... and its nuttin compared to bulk....
women these days are very worryful, self centered, n FAKE if all they care bout is ther looks....
