I'm in the process of writing a novel and one of my characters has a stress test. Before the actual test, they put something in the vein so during the test when the heart rate reaches a certain point, they can inject a type of dye. What is that little thing in the vein called? I was thinking it was a stent, but I want to be correct in my story.

This is a intravenous line - this is a special line that is placed into the vein so that at a certain point the nurse can take a syringe filled with dye or medication and inject it. This makes the dye/medication immediately available for dispensing throughout the body's blood stream.

It is an Intravenous Catheter. It is attached to a primary drip set or a primary extension set that is attached to a primary drip set, (the tubing). That is attached to a bag filled with IV fluids. The catheters range in size from 10 gauge to 28 gauge. The smaller the gauge, the larger the diameter of the catheter. for a stress test they'd probably use a 20 or 22 gauge.

Of course you could also be talking about a saline lock or heparin lock. That is where you have the catheter in your vein but don't have IV solutions attached

IV - intravenous
A stent works like a splice. It is a sheath often place on heart valves
It is not a catheter - that is a tube for a different purpose.
Good luck in your writing!

It is called intravenous cannula. It is inserted on a vein to have an access for administering intravenous injections or medicine. If is kept merely for intravenous medication purposes the hub of cannula is usually connected to short tubing with either two way or three way stopcock .

It's an intravenous catheter. However, what you're talking about sounds like intravenous dye or an angiogram - are they trying to look for blockages in the heart? because that is an angiogram, and it usually goes in through a catheter in the femoral artery. Good luck! :)

"Stress test" - Exercise tolerance test (ETT) determines the heart's response to physical extertion (stress). A common protocol uses three minute stages at set speeds and elevation of a treadmill. Continual monitoring of vital signs and ECG (electrocardiogram) rhythms are important in the diagnosis of CAD (coronary artery disease) and left ventricular function.

"cardiac catheterization" - a thin, flexible tube is guided into the heart via a vein or an artery. This procedure detects pressures and patterns of blood flow in the heart. Contrast may be inject (by catheter inserted in femoral artery) and xray images taken of the heart and blood vessels.

"angiography" - xray imaging of blood vessels after injection of contrast material.
"arteriography" xray imaging of arteries after injection of contrast into the aorta or an artery
