SAP Business Information Warehouse (SAP BW) is the name of the data warehouse solution (DWH) made by SAP AG.
BW consists among other things of components for data management (Administrator Workbench), for the definition of queries by means of an OLAP processor (Business Explorer, BEx) and for the control of loading processes. It is possible to split SAP BW in three well defined layers:


Extraction, Transformation and Load (ETL) layer - responsible for extracting data from a specific source, applying transformation rules, and loading it into SAP BW system.
Data warehouse area - responsible for storing the information in a multidimensional structure.

SAP means Systemanalyse und Programmentwicklung. This is german for System analysis and program development.
The name was later changed into Systeme, Anwendungen und Produkte in der Datenverarbeitung: Systems, application and products in the data processing.

The company is specialized in large application supporting large corporations.
SAP is well known for its ERP solution R/3. The modularity of the product allows a certain fexibility in the implementation and use.

The major components within R/3 are

Financial system
Project system
Logistic system
Human ressource
Developpment system (ABAP)

The major components outside R/3 are :
Netweaver
SAP Business Warehouse and Strategic Entreprise Management
Others

It is SAP's proprietary language used in their programs.

They insist on not using standards-based languages and environments. This is why SAP has big failed implementations. ABAP does not like other formats. Stick with Oracle, Sage Accpac, Lawson etc who use Java or .Net, although .Net is windows only
