To say that a minimum wage is only for students and part time workers is baloney. Our nearest city is all retired people , rest homes and service industries for the surrounding resorts and water sports. Most employers keep their employees working 35-37 hours a week, no benefits that way. Top wages as a dental assistant $10-12 an hour. Many other office jobs have been outsourced to India. Average 2 bedroom apt $650.
How does anyone think even $7.25 is a living wage. When illness strikes, who pays? There are no benefits . Many people hold down two jobs and have to live like hamsters on an endless wheel.
There hasn't been a minimum wage hike in 10 years.

What was added on to the bill was a provision to abolish overtime pay. You should know the Republicans don't give something to the people unless the Corporations get more!
The Congress has had 9 increases since the last raise of the minimum wage. The is a Democratic bill for congress not to get anymore raises till the minimum wage goes up.
The minimum wage in Oregon is $7.50 and I don't pay $6 for hamburgers at McDonald's. Every time the minimum wage has went up, the economy improved.

The Republicans didn't want to raise it at all. Must remind you that the Rep.s are in control and can vote in any thing they want to. Like the $3,300 raise they want before the year is up.
Their party has had the majority vote for 6 years. Not once have they approved a raise in the minimum wage, the last raise was 10 years ago. However our legislaters have voted themselves $35,000 in raises in the same 10 years, and want more, plus the perks. One being lifetime free medical care for as little as 4 years Public? service to their country. Tell that to some GI laying there with one leg!

I think it is prudent of them. Minimum wage was not meant to be a wage to support a family on. It is designed for for high school students, or part timers. Do you want to start paying $6 for a hamburger from Micky D's? The money to pay those salaries have to come from somewhere. The companies that cannot afford it will either not hire additional workers, but more than likely lay someone off. Then you'll get nothing.

After they do that, they'll complain about all the companies hiring workers in other countries at $5 an hour. "Why are the evil companies hiring foreign workers, when they can hire Americans for 3 times the cost?" Good plan Democrats, lets keep raising the minimum wage, and corporate taxes until nobody can afford to hire Americans. Don't they teach basic math in school anymore?

That was a Republican bill not democratic, also i think 7.25-8 is a good minimum wage but anyway, the reason democrats are opposed to it is because bush added on huge tax cuts for the rich.

that's more than two extra dollars an hour. if you're desperate enough to work at minumum wage, that's a lot.
have you the seen the worse Republican insult of not wanting to pay these people more money for the hard work they do? Even 7.25 an hour is barely enough to live on.

Are you serious? That's not big money. Look at the prices of everything nowadays. The minimum wage has not kept up. If it does go up then everyone else should get a raise accordingly though and they need to enforce non- legal workers. They are taking food out of our, and our childrens mouths. Sorry but it's just the way I feel.

Be glad it has passed the House because it will die in the Senate unless the Estate tax is lowered/eliminated for the rich. They always give with one hand and take from the other. This is the first increase in 10 years, while they have given themselves THREE major increases in the same period. Minimum wage should be tied to their salaries; whatever percentage they increase their own salaries should be the same percentage they have to raise the minimum wage.

That is quite a big raise, which will cost companies hundreds of thousands of dollars every month. If they raised it to say $10, many small buisinesses would go under because they couldn't afford to pay wages, and thousands of people would become unemployed.
Better a modest wage than none at all.
