CD's and DVD have lots of storage space and DVD's can hold more information than a regular hard drive.
Copy right laws very with different countries. The music industry tried to prevent the sale of CD rw players to the general public, part of the settlement was that a portion of the sales of all blank disk go to the music industry for lost sales. It is a defensible position to say that you have tied up your cash in a music cd. You don't want to wear it out so you make a copy that you can put in your car a scratch it up and replace it with another copy, using the original disk as your master. You purchased your song with the intention of not having to purchase it again. That is legal. Making a copy and giving selling it to your friends is not legal. Giving your friends a copy is on shaky grounds because you just removed a potential paying customer from the market. Loaning the cd to a friend so they can listen to it is legal. If they copy it, then the copy right infringement is with them.

Some of the newer DVD's state that copying for any purpose including a backup copy is copy right infringement.

They wish to suck every dime out of the general populaion as possible.

CD and DVD burners on home pcs are for personal use. You can put a personal video into the computer, edit it, and then burn it into dvd. That's what it's for. Technically, if you don't own a real copy of the dvd or cd and you have a burned one, that's illegal.

They make DVD burners so you canmake a copy of that vacation you went to last summer, for example. it's only for PERSONAL use. As for CD burners, they could have been created to make DATA disk, which is where you burn any documents/files on to a CD-R, then they discovered they could burn music into CD's? Not sure. lol

Burning DVD's isn't illegal.. unless it it copright protected material , which alm0st all movies and comercial music are,, then it's copyright infringement and thats against the law even if you don't make any money from it.
Your pc has a burner,, so you can burn your own un copyrightede material to a disc,, Such as home movies... etc.

It is illegal. If you are making a back up copy of a disc you already have hey that's ok. If you are making a mix cd from cd's you already have ok too. What's not ok is illegally downloading music and movies from the internet. When I say illegally it means not paying for it. For example you rent a movie from the store and make a copy, you just broke the law.

It is illegal to make copies and distribute, whether you sell or not its illegal. Technically you could make a backup for yourself. The reason they install dvd and cd-rom drives is so you can backup data, put pictures and stuff on cd's not for the purpose of distibuting copies of your music and movies.

Anyways stay legal, but have fun!

no not just to burn them for a friend or make a cd of your favorite playlist, but if you make any sort of profit, other than charging the friend for the cd cost, then it would be considered piracy and is illegal. but yeah, if you just burn them for personal use or as a gift or something then it's perfectly legal
