Try The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman. If you like it, it is a trilogy and you'll have two more books to read. It is a wonderful book.

Black Beauty
A Little Princess
The Secret Garden
Satin Slipper series (including the book Center Stage that the 2000 movie was based on.)

Some teen books to read are in the series "The Ironwood Chronicles". You don't need to read the first on to understand the second one and so forth because they are all from a diiferent point of veiw in different places and one other book you should read is called "Tales from 2 A.M." It is a book filled with great stories and they alre all about 20-60 pages long each so try them out and the author of these great books is called John Schreiber and he will be my english teachure this school year :)

Do you ever watch the show Gilmore Girls? My 13 year old daughter and I watch it together and it's really cute. Not great TV but still fun. Anyway, the character, Rory, is a BIG reader. Here is a link to her book club list:
http://thewb.warnerbros.com/web/o_generic_feedback.jsp?id=GG-Rory's+Book+Club
My daughter has started ploughing through this list, trying to find books that she likes. She's reading The Bell Jar right now. REEeeeeEEAaaaaAAAALLY depressing, but, hey, she wanted to give it a try.
I would suggest The Life of Pi, which is on the list. I got it for my other daughter when she was 13 and now it's on her sisters list.
Good luck and have fun!
