tghe best miage is a car that sits in the driveway al day.
There are a lot of parameters. Do you want something to go to work and back. Get a 4 cylinder for around town.
If you take trips over an hour you need 6 cylinders so the motor isn't screaming at you the whole way.
All 4cylinder or 6 cylinder get real comparative milage the real saver is how hard you press on the gas to make it go. If you get a smal 1.2 liter in a VW then it will suck a lot of gas making the car roll but if you get a 6 in there it is easy to make it go so you can actualy get better milage. The windo stickers for milage are bogus. Take about 3 MPG off of them and that is what you end up with.....

Cars with modern diesel engines are far more fuel efficient than cars with gasoline engines. And such cars can have fuel efficiency comparable to that of electric hybrids with gasoline motors.

"Diesel-powered cars such as the Volkswagen Jetta TDI can approach or even exceed the efficiency of many gasoline-electric hybrids."
http://cars.about.com/od/dieselvehicles/a/What_is_diesel.htm

Unfortunately, most car-makers don't sell diesel-engined cars in North America. All major automakers make such cars and sell them in Europe, Asia and in other places. But with a few exceptions, it's virtually impossible to buy such cars in North America.

In Thailand for example, almost all small Toyota pick up trucks have diesel engines. And you can buy them in Europe too. But Toyota doesn't sell any pick-up trucks or cars with diesel engines in North America.
