I have dealt with police officers in nearly every aspect. As a prosecutor, a defense attorney, and as a criminal defendant. Most cops are basically decent people and sincerely believe they are doing a public good. There are also many egomaniacs with guns and power who have absolutely no respect for any human. State troopers are the best, and the further down the jurisdictional ladder you go the less professional the officers become. But then again how many of us would be willing to put our lives on the line for 6 to 10 dollars per hour, which is what far too many city cops and deputy sheriffs earn.

Honest people in general don't seem to get a lot of respect. I think that all honest police officers should get a high five. That job is much tougher and life threatening than most people realize. A "simple" traffic stop can get an officer's head blown off. So, kudos to our uniformed protectors!

I learned, growing up, that the policeman is our friend - the one to go to when in trouble. These days, the police seem to look for the worst in everyone - and consider people guilty until proven innocent. That is not the way it should be - little children are even frightened by the police come on in their threatening ways.

Just like pretty much everyone else, cops are the victims of a lot of stereotypes. We all know that not every mailman steals mail, not every Amtrak train is late, and not every airplane crashes but a lot of people prefer to focus on those stereotypes rather than get to know a person.
