It is obviously an over reaction to kill 300 innocent people and cause indirect economic damage of more than 3000 billion $ but Israel does have a point in choosing a more extreme way to solve a never-ending problem , that of missile attack and suicide bombs . However , the rashness it showed by killing children and destroying lives will turn against it . You can't blame someone for hating Israel after it killed his family and destroyed his home.

Yes, Israel claimed defense because it was defending itself. And Lebanon isn't destroyed. Frankly, Israel has a lot of sh*t to deal with- the whole Middle East. But every country has some stake in the conflict, and as a result this conflict goes WAY beyond the Middle East.
