clattering noise from what appears to be a stuck valve or lash adjuster. It is somewhat loud at idle but stops on takeoff or under a load. I've put 0W-20 syn. that has helped, but the noise is embaressing.
I have changed the timming belt and tensioner myself and belive I can tear down to the valves but lifting the cam and finding the right mark or posotion scaires me. How hard is this to do and describe for me if you will the adjusting of the lashes.

The reason it clatters at idle is that the oil pump can't pump enough oil to maintain proper oil pressure due to engine wear in the crank, connecting rods, cam shaft, main bearings, etc.

As soon as the engine speed increases, the oil pump supplies more oil to the engine.

i would consider replacing the oil pump.

First though, try changing oil to a higher viscosity.
Maybe 15W-30.
