When I was younger one of my lecturers explained the appeal of conservative ideology like this: it's a basic axiom of all strands of conservatism that you can achieve the greatest good by pursuing your own self interest whether in economics, religion or politics. I personally don't go along with that but it does have a certain simple intellectual pull to certain people.

1. The younger people think the "hippy" generation is the cause and effect of problems today just like I thought the "commie hunters" (Nixon) generation was the problem in my younger days.
2. They do not enjoy the benefits of a National Military Draft.
3. They do not appreciate that 54,000 of my generation died in the jungles of SE Asia for the right of 18 years old to vote.

True conservatism is about freedom. Freedom from high taxes, from the government telling you how to run your life, from the government telling you how to run your business, from the government telling you what to eat or drink or smoke.
Freedom is attractive to everyone, but especially to younger people. After all, what teenager doesn't want to be free from their parents, or school, or other responsibilities.
