What are some options available for a Masters (or Ph.D) in Software Engineering?

As an entry qualification, these might be useful. But I've been in the software business for over 20 years - and I never even went to college.

Point being, do you really want/need to spend more (?) time in college to get a start in the software business, or would you prefer taking a menial coding job for now & working your way into someting fun ?

It took me about 3 years to get a programming job, after leaving school. I was planning to do a 4-year BSc at college (except I didn't get the grades - too busy not working).

So right now, I'm an integration architect (mainly building SOA services), and it's been almost 20 years since anyone cared that I didn't have a degree.

When I retire (another 7 years - when I'm 50YO) I plan on going to college.....to study Geology - software engineering is SO dull.

I would grab the bull by the horns and try to write software programs with Microsoft Visual Basic.Really great programs like Paint Shop Pro.Then you sell the programs to Dell Computer.Dell puts them on the Internet as a Free fully functional download.Get your friends together and start a company!(it ain't easy)
