I am able to express myself clearly on paper and my spelling and grammar are generally good. Unfortunately, when I speak, I find myself saying "like" or "wanna" or "'cuz". In my head I can enunciate perfectly and generally have sentences that are well-constructed, but when I speak I occasionally stutter and can't get my thought out. I also find myself embarrassed to use words that I use in my head, such as "prolix" or "recondite" because I simply can't pull them off. How do my well-spoken professors do so?

Get a tape recorder and record some reading with the least used words in your vocabulary.
Use the words that you are misusing from habit.
Play back.
Practice, practice.

I don't know, but I will come back to read the intelligent answers of others, because I feel I have the same problem. I have always read a lot, and express myself well in writing. However, I have sometimes been infuriatingly slow to formulate the same eloquency when conversing with others. I think your professors can do it because they have had lots of practice. The geographic area in which you live also influences how you speak.
