A good question with no concrete answer. Education and experience in the English language play a strong hand in the correct use of word emphasis. Listening to key speakers at distinguished events will certainly help.

One example is the word preparatory. Many pronounce the word as prep-a-tory, but as I learned in an NCO Academy years ago, the correct pronunciation is pre-par-atory with the emphasis placed on the syllable par as in saying pare or pear.

I am open to learning more about this topic.

Its the one that you draw out longer, or you would emphasise when you're yelling at someone.
