What make, ie MerCruiser, Volvo or OMC? What year? Some of the older Volvo (270-290) drives require a different earmuff flusher. OMC electric shift drives require a trunnion cap style flush attachment. You local boat shop can help assist you in the proper flushing attachment.
NEVER start and run a marine engine without a water supply, you will damage the rubber water pump impeller.
The plunger attachment someone spoke of is for inboard engines, not used for sterndrive applications.
I see from your other question, you do have an outboard motor correct? If so, What year, make and horsepower ?

You can get a pair of ear muffs for the motor. That you hook a garden hose too, that way your motor well still get water. If the motor is not on the boat you can always dump it into a 55 gallon bucket full of water. The ear muffs should run about $20 at a boat dealer or even wal-mart! Good luck

You can go to Wal-Mart and buy a "Water Muffs", they are only about three dollars. They look like big ear muffs. You attach your garden hose to them and then put them on the base of the motor, down by the propeller. You will see 3 or 4 little holes where the water from the lake or ocean comes in to the motor. That is where the muffs will fit over it and the water from your garden hose will keep water going into the motor.

You can run an outboard for a short period, like just to see if it starts right on the boat. However, if you need to let it run for any time, it's best to put a barrel of water under the motor and submerge the water intake, so it is able to cool the motor. Otherwise you might burn up the motor.

They have things things called "ears". they look like earmuffs and they go over the intake of the motor and hook up to the hose. you turn on the hose and the engine sucks up the water thru the ears. Its always good to use these if you are runnung in salt water everytime you take the boat out.

If you need to run your outboard motor for maintenance, or to clean salt water out of it, then you should invest in a large (55 gallon) drum. It will need to be deep enough to submerge the outshaft/prop and have enough water capacity to completely cycle through the motor.

You can buy a thingie that looks like big ear muffs that fit over the water inlet ports that hooks up to a garden hose to keep the engine from overheating and water pump problems.

if you are changing the spark plugs or doing other maintenance and trying to test it, fill a metal trash can with water, then attach the outboard to it to see if it runs okay.
