That's always a tough question. But in recent years the Book that hit me hardest was Lanark: A Life in Four Books by Alasdair Gray.

I also can never get enough of James Joyce. Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man should be read by any one who wonders why this guy is famous

The best book I've ever read is Decipher by Stel Pavlou...definately a MUST read!!!
although I love anything by David Eddings, and The Anita Blake books by Laurell K Hamilton are incredibaly awesome too!!! - if you go for gothic vampirey stuff:)
