Okay foks we've got a lot of good info, but a lot of bad infomation lethal info here.
1)Aeration- Other than goldfish, bettas, gourmis fish need some sort of aeration, or a filter.
2)Heating- Other gold fish, guppies, bettas and a couple of other fish need heating.
3)Filtrartion- All fish produce waste in the form of ammonia. There are 2 way to remove it. A filter, or changing the water. This is basic biological truth in a fish tank or bowl. Unless you got 50-100 gallon per fish like in nature.
Thus from the above we've removed everythiny, but goldfish, and bettas.
Goldfish are large bodied fish with high waste output that rapidly grow quite large. Most goldfish in bowl live a few months before they die of ammonia poisoning. A goldfish really needs a 10 galon filtered tank for a single adult fish. That said a small goldfish can survive in a 3 gallon bowl for about 6 months with weekly complete water changes. After about 6 months you need to move to a big tank. This assumes a stabe temp between water changes, and no over feeding.
Bettas are pretty much the only fish suitable for a fish bowl. Don't believe that they prefer small bowls. Also they prefer temps in the low 80s, but survive into the low 70s. With a proper diet, no sunden temp changes, and clean water a betta can live in a bowl for years. Personally I prefer to use a small 2.5 gallon tank for a betta as it healthier and less work cleaning.

A beta because they are happy in small environments like a fish bowl. It is cruel to put a goldfish in a fishbowl because it is not enough space for them to live comfortably. I think you should get a beta and get one of thse fishbowls that has a plant on top. It looks pretty and I hear you don't have to feed the fish all that often because they can eat the roots of the plant. (I don't know if that part is true; a friend told me that.) But I think that a beta would be a good choice. (And they are really pretty colors too)

Goldfish or Betas in a bowl are not really low maintenance. You must remove them from the bowl and clean it weekly at least. You can get a small 1 1\2 gal to 5 gal aquarium with a filter for very cheap. This is a better choice because you usually only have to change or rinse the filter when it gets dirty and occasionally vacuum out the bottom a little and then re add dechlorinated water. I have had both and I found the small aquariums so much easier and forgiving in maintenance. If you get a Betta you can only get one and remember the size of the tank dictates how many fish you can get. Have fun.

Go with the betta. Goldfish require too much space (30-gallons and create a lot of waste. As for decorations, I would suggest getting an miniature ornament or a silk plant. A suggested tank-mate for the betta in the fishbowl would be a few Ghost Shrimp. Ghost Shrimp are algae eaters like the Plecostomus but only reach a maximum size of 1". I hope this helps.

DO NOT LISTEN TO THE MORONS WHO RECOMEND GOLDFISH.
Goldfish need a minimum of 10 gallons PER baby/juvenile fat fancy goldfish, and a minimum of 20 gallons PER baby/juvenile commet/common/shubunkin goldfish. Adults need a minimum of 50 gallons PER goldfish. Goldfish excrete ALOT of ammonia and need heavy filtration. They also have a lifespan of 40 yrs and they grow to be 12-14 inches long.
The only fish that can survive in a bowl is a single male betta. However the bowl cannot be any less then 1 gallon and it will need cleaning once a week. Honestly there is a difference between just surviving and actually thriving. The betta will do alot better if it were in a heated and filtered tank atleast 5 gallons.
bowls are for candy or flowers, not fish.

Yes, it is possible to keep smaller fish in a bowl, but ALL fish need to be kept in a tank with a filter and heater. In a bowl, the water just sits and becomes stagnant, causing the fish stress, and it will end up killing the fish faster. Keeping a fish in a tank (even if it's just 2 gallons) is a LOT better for the sake of the fish. Yes, that includes bettas. Bettas should have at least a 5 gallon tank, and they need to have the water temperature between 75 and 80 degrees F, just like any other tropical fish. So please, do NOT keep any fish in a bowl, it's torture for the fish!

Goldfish don't belong in bowls... they produce a lot of ammonia and they will outgrow it. They need much larger tank... at least 30 gallons as an adult.
If you must, get a Betta. There's no other kind of fish that can survive in a bowl.

Neon tetra's are a remarkable fish, yet they only substitute right into a around 2". i like the flowery Tail Guppies their colorations are large and that they provide beginning to stay babies (you're able to need a place for the babies to disguise or the mothers and dads will consume them). yet another attractive Fish is a purple tail black shark, they advance to approximately 3-4" (they do no longer look to be guy ingesting sharks) have relaxing with installation the aquarium!

goldfish are cheap, but remember that they die fast as you use regular tap water and no one uses water conditioner let alone a filter and they will eat themselves to death. just a flake or so is enough as over feeding will kill them. you can get 10 gallon tanks with everything at many shops for under 30.00. the fish will last along time and you can put others in with the goldfish and relax just watching them.

the best and only one should be a betta. goldfish can get up to 6 inches and they do not last that long without a filter. thats why they use goldfish for little kids at the carnival because they dont last that long.
