clean the filter or buy a new one, vaccuum out the coils ( the metal ridges behind the filter) and vaccuum out the cover for the air conditioner... dust will make it less efficent and those things get pretty dusty fairly quickly... also make sure that the window unit is rated to cool the size of the room you have it in... if you are talking about a central air unit, change the air filter in your central system, and get a "tune up" from your local air conditoning/ home heating service. Try using thermal insulated drapes or curtains on the windows ( with the white rubber backing) that will keep the cool in, also keep doors closed, so that the cool air stays where you want it.

If you are referring to the A/C in your home, I agree that the best thing to do is to clean or, if applicable, replace the filter (at least every 30 days).
If, however, you are referring to the A/C in your car, you should have a mechanic check the coolant level and, if needed, add coolant. They used to put Freon in air conditioners until it was decided that Freon was bad for the environment. Now I think they use something else.
Good Luck. I live on the Gulf coast in Texas and it is hotter than Hades right now.

Try cleaning the filter. Often the filter is full of dust, so the machine spends more energy trying to suck in air than actually cooling. By cleaning or changing your filter, the machine will have an easier time and run more efficiently.

Change the filter and vacuum the vents. Check to see that your ductwork is insulated. If not then add wrap insulation to the ones that are accessible. If this does not help you may need to have your ductwork cleaned. Hope this helps.

Leave your house/apt. You're creating heat inside, this requires the A/C to work harder, which will in turn, jack up your electric bill, and I'm sure you don't want that. Also, put any and all pets outside, they create heat too.
