The triangle was used by the Nazis to identify "deviants." Jews, homosexuals, gypsies, etc., each had a different type of triangle. The LGBT community "reclaimed" the triangle and turned it into a positive image, like the word "queer."
I think the rainbow is a Wizard of Oz reference.

The triangle shape is from the holocaust. The nazis used triangles to identify the gays from the straights. Gay women were given black triangles and gay men were given pink. The triangle is a symbol of rememberance. The rainbow, to me, is a symbol of peace. In the Christian religion, God flooded the earth and @ the end made a rainbow and promised that the symbol of the rainbow was a sign that he would never again flood the earth. : ) Some also believe a completely different aspect of the rainbow. That for every color it represents a different race, creed, color, whatever. And all those colors and creeds come together as one. Again...peace : )

Not sure by the tone of your question if you are intent on learning something or if you are just intent on harassment. However, here is some history behind both symbols you 'inquired' about:
TRIANGLE BADGES/SYMBOLS were used by the Nazis to identify prisoner classifications in concentration camps during WWII. Every prisoner had to wear a triangle on his or her jacket, the color of which was to categorize him or her according "to his kind." Jews had to wear the yellow badge, and "anti-social individuals" (which included vagrants, "work shy" individuals and often, but not exclusively, lesbians), the black triangle.
The pink triangle (German: Rosa Winkel) was one of the Nazi concentration camp badges, used by the Nazis to identify male prisoners in concentration camps who were sent there because of their homosexuality.
The inverted pink triangle has become an international symbol of gay pride and the gay rights movement.
RAINBOW FLAG: A rainbow flag is a multi-colored flag consisting of stripes in the colors of the rainbow.
The use of rainbow flags has a long tradition; they are displayed in many cultures around the world as a sign of diversity and inclusiveness, of hope and of yearning. This denotation goes back to the rainbow as a symbol of biblical promise, and the use of all the colours of the rainbow symbolises all flags in one. The colors in the rainbow flag used by the gay community represent the following:
red - life
orange - healing
yellow - sunlight
green - nature
turquoise - magic
blue - serenity
violet - spirit

The "rainbow" is not just gay, it includes ALL minorities for a damned good reason. Until such time that the majority stops trying to run over minorities they deem unsuitable, the minorities are going to be in the face of the majority to remind them "we are here and we are NOT going away." How easy it is to forget that as a democratic nation, we are controlled by the majority, but protect the minorities. History is a very good teacher! It is sad that so few remember the lessons from the past. The PINK TRIANGLE was forced onto the sleeves of ALL gays in Germany under Nazi rule! These people were carted off to camps, made ot do slave labor, and gassed in the ovens....how quickly we forget. And, sadly, how quickly we try to revise history as if none of the holocaust really happened. Fools forget the past and are bound to repeat the same mistakes in the future. Trust me, a Pink Triangle is NOT just a shape. I hope this helps you understand where Gays are coming from. All you have to do is read here to see the unreasonable hate directed at them...by people who have no dealings with them...just hate for hate's sake, and usually in the name of their god, who they say "loves all." They make a very sad contradiction...it is as if the Ten Commandments have and "except" tacked on after every on of God's laws. To my knowledge, God did not have an "except" in any of his rules to live by. Good luck

Leprachauns are all male, and they have gold at rainbows, isn't it obvious?
Yes this is sarcasm and not a serious response at all.
I don't really agree with throwing rainbows around either, and I -am- gay. It really confused me for awhile too. But it's most likely because some people want to be independant and have equal rights, which is kind've ironic when you think about it. Being accepted and having your own logo like a damn superhero are two different things.
But mostly, it's to show pride of their sexuality, I actually think heterosexual people shoudl take pride in their sexuality and have marches too it's just most people complain more than anything.

the rainbow ia m not sure about, but the pink triangle i know for sure. the pink triangle was a way the nazis were able to i dentify a gay male quickly in the consentration camps. they used a series of trianfgles of different colours to identify people quickly based on the reason why they were there in the first place. during that time lesbians wore a black triangle for political dissident because the nazis believed lesbianism was a ploy to stop reproducing future german "aryans". as for the straight not having a symbol, well no one said you couldn't have one.

the rainbow was a tribute to Judy Garland, who sang over the rainbow, and was a notorious supporter of the gay community.
The Triangle is from the holocaust. Gay men in Nazi countries were forced to where a pink triangle (like the jews and the yellow star) so they could be identified.

OK honey homo 101, the rainbow was chosen as our symbol because it represents the unity and diversity in the gay community. the pink triangle is from the Holocaust, the Nazi's killed thousands and thousands of homosexuals, their uniforms were tagged with a pink triangle to designate special torture, i know its not in your history books but theres a whole wall in the Holocaust museum in Washington dc.

If you really wanted to "learn" something, at least have an open mind. The(pink) triangle was used in during World War II to identify gay men and lesbians(I think it was the black triangle) in the concentration camps. The rainbow is a symbol of diversity.
It sounds to me like you really didn't want to to "learn" anything, just bash and be hateful(Why do people who really don't want to learn about the GLBT community come here and just post hurtful and ignorant comments and questions?). That's like saying that black folks don't need to have black pride or icons to remind us of who we are, where we've been, and where we're going. And don't forget about women's rights as well!
You can only speak for yourself, not every heterosexual person in America(just like I can speak for myself, and not the entire GLBT community!). You are entitled to your opinion, but if you have to be insensitive to something that you don't truly understand, then it's best to keep your mouth shut and your point of view to yourself.
rp iowa, school them some more..I definitely learned something!

They never say they are liars or do not pay debts, it is obvious all of them make their fears look like common demands and social calls on their instincts and perceptions, because no one of them wants others to apreciate they are sick and racist. Racist people are always vindictive of children dreams and illusions, so take rainbow as their hope of healthy transfussion, and have the triangle as a token of good will, something to call up on hopes and secrets of others. So it is known to me they want to know and use their bias to fulfill regret and perfection before healthy members of society. Perhaps this opinion of mine is not true, but it seems so to me, really. I have to say I am not upset with them, and sure wish there is a good recipe soon on aids and sarin.
I think their icons are to be Paddy shamrocks and key chains with coins.
