some friends plan to buy a home pet like a rabbit for example and then expose it to a variety of chemicals like high doses of nicotine or any other chemicals that affects the brain ,,,,

i think they r nuts ...but they say scientist do that and they have the right to apply what they learned to pets so they understand better and start their own research ...

what you think ?

I have done such experiments on aquarium fish, BUT under the watchful eye of a Biologist within a university system, and following established protocols! Unless conducted within such an environment your friend's tests ARE ILLEGAL!

Scientists must have a well layed out design for their experiment before beginning! They also must justify WHY the use of animals is necessary before they start!

You may only use an animal for 1 experiment (to expose say a rabbit to several chemicals during separate occasions - is nothing less then cruelty). After that 1 experiment is concluded the animals MUST be euthanized humanely and turned over to the proper animal welfare administrator (exceptions do exist where additional information is required - autotopsy, ash free dry weight, etc - even so the animal is still euthanized in a humane manner).

Additionally before, and during the experment you have to keep meticulous daily records on how the animal is kept (including temperature, humidity, air pressure, etc), feeding (what, when, how much, amount uneaten), water changed, animal moved, cage/tank cleaned, medical records, etc. This requires extreme attention on behalf of the researcher(s).

Lastly, a laboratory and researcher must have the proper licensing to conduct such experiments, and be under the supervision of a government approved animal welfare agency (often a board of like researchers, animal rights people, government agencies, etc). If violation of these rules were to occur, loss of funding, licensing, and even jail terms may be applied.

Tell your friends to wait until they are in college, and can do so following the rules. Chances are, much of what they want to experiment has already been done by the book, and they should start reading! Perhaps once they understand what's already been done, they can design an experiment that would further expand upon these past studies, and get the help of a college professor/advisor to conduct it the right way!

If they still insist on going through with this now, try to get them to at least talk to a professional scientist (is there a toxicology lab or university with a decent biology department nearby). If this doesn't work, either report them to the ASPCA, or notify local pet suppliers of your friends attentions BEFORE the animal is purchased.

It is wrong for them to do that. The scientists that do that are professionals that know the most humane way to do it. Most of the time things are done by simulation (by injecting them with the known toxins). Not only do they know how to do it they are licensed to do it. If someone who is not licensed does this they can be charged with cruelty to animals , face fines, jail time, and community service.
Oh, another thing the animals that scientists use are specially bred for these experiments PETS ARE NOT USED !

I think your friends are dabbling in trouble. I would suggest they find out if there are any laws against home experimentation on animals. Laboratories that do such things are very strictly regulated by the government and are closely watched by animal rights groups. If they do go foreward with this idea, and someone calls the cops on them, they just might find themselves in front of a judge charged with animal cruelty.

PLEASE report them; you can do it anonymously. There is some level of animal experimentation that is OK within context of science but it doesn't sound like these guys are scientists. This is very illegal and very wrong.
Since you know about this you really do have an obligation to stop this if you believe it is wrong. Take action, do the right thing!

illegal!

Scientists have to go through many institutions to get the proper authority to experiment on animals. They can't just all of a sudden decide to do X experiment and go and do it...it takes committee's to approve the use, the government has to approve the use, it's not a whim sort of thing. Use of animals is highly regulated by government laws and other institutions (see below)

What your 'friends' would be doing is called cruelty to animals, and is a felony. If I knew who your friends were I would report them myself right now!

I think that they r not scientists and they don't have the right to do that and if they do they can be charged with animal cruelty and go to jail. So i suggest u tell your friends that and until they do earn a degree they have no right to do that!

You are the chosen one, yes you, shall free the rabbit from the grip of your evil friends.

Tell you what, why dont we thrust a tube up your noseand see how you like a concentration of nicotine?

Seriously, make your friends grow up, its for your own good.

Scientists legally can. Your friends are committing cruelty to animals. They are the types that grow up to kill people, and eat them. Stop them now.

no scientists dont do that. scientists do research, but your friends just want to abuse animals for no meaningful reason, not going to discover anything remarkable. they are sick. tell their parents, families what they are up to. if they are grown-up, which i doubt, tell the police.

before that, you can suggest that humans make better objecs for experiments because thay can give feedback...
