Hard to answer definitively without knowing more detail. Are you replacing a damaged one or putting in a new one? But, having said that here are some tips. In the normal phone cord there will be four conductors. Only two are used for any given phone line. GENERALLY, read and green are the two that are used but not always. (That helps a LOT doesn't it?) So red to red and green to green is the first try. It you don't get a dial tone, keep switching around till you get one. It can take a while unless you have a VOM in which case, you look for about 48 Volt DC between two conductors. When you find that, bingo.

This is the way to install a new phone jack.
1. Go to the store and buy the supplies that you need: surface mount phone jack, 4 conductor phone wire and some phone wire staples.
2. Get a 1/4" drill bit and drill a hole in the floor where you want your jack at (make sure that you do not drill into the floor joist)
3. Push the wire down the hole, (You will need a helper) Then go
under your house and find the wire and pull it back to where your phone box is located outside your house.
4. Get the wire into your phone box with about 6-8" of wire hanging out.
5. Next go back under your house and starting at the outside phone box, start stapleling the wire up until you get to the hole that you drilled in the floor.
6. Go inside and wire your phone jack acording to the instructions on the package. You will have 4 wires, Red and .Green is one pair and Black and Yellow is the other pair. Your
phone jack should be marked by letters, R=Red, G=Green, B=Black and Y=Yellow.
7. After you have it correctly wired then mount the jack to your baseboard with the screws provided and with the double stick tape also provided.
8. Next go to the box outside and hook up the wires color to color just as you see in the box.
9.Plug in your phone to your new jack and Viola! it works!
Hope this helps.

The wires are color coded. Same color go to the same terminal. Follow instruction on package of phone jack you buy.
