I'm 16 too and when I broke my leg I mainly stayed indoors because I couldn't get a hang on crutches either. But I used them around the house to get used to them if we were going out, I couldn't hop everywhere after all lol.
When I was at home though, I spent most of my time writing short stories and things, but not all people are interested in that. I was also off school so my teachers sent me homework but as it's the summer holidays, maybe try and get him interested in books and magazines? If he's into sports, try getting a few sports books from the library and take him with you so he can choose his own.
If books and magazines don't cut it, try getting him interested in a hobby he could do from home, like warhammer, or something similar. And if you ever need to go clothes shopping, do it over the Internet perhaps.

Well as the old saying goes " ...since mohamed can't go to the mountains gonna have to bring the mountains to mohamed or something like that forgive me for remembering that completely but you get the idea, it will take some long range planning a week at a time Frist thing would be to figure out his likes and abilities sometimes these things happen to good people so he has to take it in stride he can learn so much in 4 months and he got the world at his fingertips thanks to the internet but you should limit his computer time to the evenings during the day plan more engaging activities and let him finish his day with a little computer time I would recommend getting him a microscope and let him collect samples from the backyard to examine and draw and let him tell you about them what ever he learns let him tell you about it kids hate to learn new stuff if they can't show off what they know, cooking he can try his hand at that and he can start contribting to the menu as well as preperation give him a chance to do some mother son bonding I had fun when my mom ordered me into the kitchen and shared her cooking secrets with me she did not her son not to be able to fend for himself so like a Jedi master to a Jedi Student she showed me some things, also if you can... find some old "throw away" pieces of electronic equipment give him some tools and tell him he can take it apart then have him guess its function or you guess what it is. books are fine but not to much fun if read alone if he got siblings get them all the same copy of a book of their choice and they can have their own book club if you got the time you can join in too and don't think he don't want you around cause my 14 year old cousin had a fit when he and his mom started reading a book together and mom was late home from work and not able to read with him we were shocked cause we had not realized how important that time together hadbecome to him so anything you think is too hokey pokey cause you think he too old and won't like it guess again they really love that stuff!! hope that helps good luck!!!! Byahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! I'm sorry its the Howard Dean in me. Cheers!

He'll figure the crutches out. I did when I broke my leg at 7. Well, actually, maybe I didn't, because I tore up my mom's carpet with the cast...lol

Give him some comics or books to read which interest him such as novels, self-help books, autobiographies of his favourite personalities or any other book which might help him to develop a new hobby such as pencil sketching n shading...give him a phone line so he can call his friends, a TV set in his room, a regular supply of munchies and maybe subscribe him a weekely magazine of his choice ....

Use your motherly instinct and shower him with words of encouragement...of course he can do ANYTHING!!! He just has to practice as with all things that are new. He can play video games, board games, cards, watch movies together, draw, have him keep a journal of his recovery; from the time he broke his leg, 'til the day the cast comes off, karaoke, just to name a few things....
Happy recovery!!!

when my son broke his leg and was in a cast he found it easier not to use the crutches, if you push down on the cast in makes it easier to walk on the leg. it doesnt hurt the healing process and it easies the pressure of the cast. you can have his friends come for cast signing, movie time
