what is the best sonic game to get?

The answer depends on what sort of game your prefer! If you prefer modern, nice looking 3D games then you have three choices - Sonic Adventure 2 on the Dreamcast or GameCube, Sonic Heroes on the GameCube or Xbox, or you can wait for the new Sonic The Hedgehog game coming out on Xbox 360 and PS3. I might be jumping the gun a little with the last suggestion, but I am pretty sure the game will be the best 3D Sonic game to date :)
On the other hand, if you prefer the old style 2D games, then you can't go wrong with Sonic! Every single one of Sonic's 2D platformer games are great to play. Many say that Sonic Rush on the Nintendo DS is the best Sonic 2D game. I will at least say it is one of the best games from Sonic Team or on the DS. Alternatively, you can chose an older Sonic game for the Genesis/MegaDrive (Same console, different names for the US and Europe). Any of the first three are great, but I prefer Sonic The Hedgehog 2 over any other 2D Sonic game.

If you have a PS2, Xbox, GameCube or Sega Saturn you can get a collection of Sonic games on one CD - either Sonic Mega Collection for the first three systems mentioned, or Sonic Jam on the Saturn. I'd advice getting these collections.

If you are looking for ONE single best Sonic game then go for Sonic Rush if you have a DS, or Sonic The Hedgehog 2 if you have a Genesis/Megadrive.

The modern ones suck. Trust me. You'd be better off buying a used Genesis and playing the good Sonic games...Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic Spinball, etc. Not to mention the fact that a lot of good games apart from Sonic came out for the Genesis. My personal favorite for that system was Shinobi III.

I'm highly biased because Sonic 2 for Genesis was my first video game ever... So I'd have to say that's the best.

If you're looking for 3D though, try Sonic Adventure 2 (Battle for Gamecube). But it looks like you already did, huh?

Sonic Wildfire (Wii) is coming out end of this year or early next, and it's going to bring the series back to its roots: SPEED. Just wait for it.

I personally liked the sonic adventure series for dreamcast. They made another version of the first sonic adventure for the gamecube. I haven't played any of the older sonic games.
