When I read articles from the UK, the word "whilst" appears a lot. Not a word we us in the USA. Does it mean the same as "While", or does it have a different meaning?

Yes, you are correct. Here in the UK "whilst" is used often when you would use "while" in other English-speaking countries. It has a slight nuance: a Brit would be more inclined to use "whilst" if he were referring to an actual time involved, and it is more likely to appear as the first word of a sentence than is "while". It is ALWAYS a conjunction: you never hear "all the whilst". In the current generation it is commonly held to be the form used by educated speakers, but it is definitely NOT "old-fashioned"..

"whilst" has only one meaning.
It is a lesser used variation of "while."
It was used more commonly in days gone by but it isn't archaic.
