This is a question that really can't be answered because everyone would give an opinion. Many would say early chili peppers, other's would say Blood Sugar Sex Magik because that is the album that really broke through to the mainstream. I can't answer that because I think all of there music plays a significant part.

OMG!!!
Californication is my favorite.
IT IS AWESOME!
Why? Well, it kicks you off with a song that stays ringing in your ears (blaring actually) such as "Around the World". The album consists of songs loud and fast as well like "Get on Top" and "Parallel Universe" and it has slower more provocative ones like "Californication" and "Porcline".
As usual, the music is great and the singing - what a voice.
My favorite is the mellow end to the album in "Road Trippin'" that does nothin but make you rewind your CD player, stereo or iPod playlist to hear each and every amazing song again.
