An Intel Core 2 is faster than MOST Pentium 4's and MOST pentium 4s are faster than a Pentium 3. But how much faster depends on the models. Because of changes in the way the chips are designed, they are now not clearly faster based simply on MHz/GHz - they can be faster because of other enhancements to the chips.

a new processor board and memory will be infinitely faster than a p3 settup ... if your multitasking with heavy processor usage apps like video converting get a dual core , otherwise you wont notice much difference between a late model single or dual core.

i have heard the core 2's aren't a lot faster unless you run more than one application at the same time...
like say you have a 3.0Ghz processor...
and a core 2 2.6Ghz processor
I would think the 3.0 is faster, but im no expert that is what my friend told me...

Here's a pretty good way to compare. Don't forget that there are the great AMD processors as well that are being used in Sun and HP servers.
