Typically it is not an efficient method, and typically it doesn't work. People have a funny way of being able to survive. Hitler could not destroy the Jews. The Israelites destroyed many kingdoms on their way to the promise land, but many resurfaced. Genocide is a quick fix. Not a lasting end to any problems. Plus it is terrible, and the scars of war rarely heal.

It's only acceptable if you're shooting stupid people instead of someone of a specific race or religion. Race and religion don't enter into it, since they're irrelevant to an intelligent person. The only exception is Scientology, since everyone in there is too stupid to avoid being suckered by a cult founded by a crappy science fiction writer.

Contraception and sterilization are better than famine or genocide. But if population will continue to grow, it will happen again, as many times before.
