Back in the beginnings of the creation of the Black Muslims, they tended to use "X" instead of a last name because they claimed that their true African names had been stolen via slavery, and so they had no name to use. When there were several people in the same mosque with a name, they'd be John 2X, etc. As for the 3X Butler, etc., I can't answer that one. Nowadays, Black Muslims tend to take Arabic names and don't use the "X" so much any more

The reason Muslims from America used the last name X, they believed that our true name was not known when Africans where brought here from Africa. Most African American last names where the slave owners last name and the slave owners used their own last names to mark their slaves. So Malcom along with many others took on the last name X to show that the real African names where not known being that our ancestors where brought here from Africa. X means unknown.

I don't believe in the KKK or Malcom X. The KKK are racists and so was Malcom X. Now Martin Luthar King was a good man, he wanted to bring the races together.

It means that Malcolm did not want to use any "white man's last name." The X meant because his race was forced from Africa, the last name was unknown.
