Depends on what you want to do with it. But in general one can say that its more important to invest in enough ram, a good and fast graphics card and especially good & fast harddisks (I recommend more than 1 hdu ). That gives your system a general performance boost. Having said this, I have to admit that for some applications it may pay out to have such an extreme edition thing.

From benchmarks I have seen no. The high end AMD processors are both cheaper and out perform them. I hear the new Core 2 processor line is very reliable though.
