So many people tell me this was a great movie. Suppose it fulfills some sort of martyr fetish that these people have.

Yes, I do.

Mel Gibson's formulaic good vs evil movies have become so incredibly boring, it's almost nauseous. Yes, the effects are fine, it is incredible what brutality people can inflivt on their enemies, we get it. But more than not, the good guys in history do fail.

You might have more fun watching superhero cartoons. They're just as predictable, with the sole exception that they're not rated R.

When a movie comes out, it can be considered a great accomplishment, but years later, it doesn't hold the same impact as its initial presence. I don't feel it was over-rated. At the time, it was an excellent movie, and I don't know one "MAN" who does not hold the traits in himself to do anything and everything to fight for his family, people, and land. No one wants to be a martyr, no one wants his family and land to suffer to start with, but if tragedy and a fight have to come, and someone must die, let him or her die for their beliefs, and let these Hollywood depictions show what sacrifice can accomplish.

Well, it was a bit overrated, but it's still in my top 5 of all time. Men in kilts, Highland accents, violence, love? It's got it all.
