A "friend" is a person who can give help to you, share your problems, give advice, be able to give correct guidance; etc. You can have thousands of friends but useless fellows. Thus, the words go "one good friend is more than enough" and another "that are what friends for". Very true!

A true friend is always there for you no matter
what. Meaning, no matter what you have or don't have they are there to support you. You will be fortunate to have 3 true friends in your life.
Answer to the second part of you question.
No. It is the person saying they are a friend that is misusing the word. Unless they truly
are a friend.

yes...because nowadays ANYONE u talk 2 becomes your "friend" automatically without even knowing each other so well.....but the REAL definition of friends is "a person you can trust" or a person you can put your life on the line for, a person you can kill for and you and you can tell them ANYTHING......these types of "friends" are HARD 2 find so nowadays people just call whoever they KNOW or talk 2 their "friends"

there are different levels of friendship: ACQUAINTANCES, those you were introduced together by a common friend, or just met somewhere and you simply nod or smile whenever you happen to see them again, CASUAL friends- those whom you have common interests but you're not always together, CYBER friends-those you just accepted invites in your myspace or friendster, or chat with through the internet, CLOSE friends- your peers whom you always hangout with, and share your concerns and problems in life, and that includes your BEST FRIEND whom you know you can always trust, and understand you for you both have accepted and love each other..;)

Yes, the term is misused.
The standard for what makes a friendship is actually a lot higher than what people generally experience with "friends".

Yes, the word friends is overused. I have many acquaintances and colleagues, but few friends. Those friends I do have are loyal. I would lay down on the tracks for them and they for me.
