Generally speaking, it is much easier to replace the harddrive than to repair it. The harddrive housing is hermetically sealed to prevent dust and moisture contamination.

If you are contemplating dismantling then fixing forget it.These things are made in very clean areas - by this I mean that they make hospitals look filthy. They are really hard to fix unless it can be reformatted - otherwise its cheaper to get another one. Even if it does work ok now it has had to be fixed you don't how reliable its going to be in future. Then you could loose all you important personal data and that would be really hard to get back. If it could be it wouldn't be cheap either.

I advise you to think very carefully about when making you next move.

if it's completely knackered you will have to replace it.
