Its normally sold by weight, and theres no average fixed price, so get a few quotes for the amount you need. Its alsocheaper if you are collecting, but if you are buying a lot then just get it delivered to site..it makes the job a LOT simpler.

Depends on what your application is. But, you are in luck. Ag ballast is some of the least expensive basic materials available.
Some things to consider:
- Usually comes in different sizes measured in terms of rock size; fine, small, medium and large or course.
- You can get washed or un-washed;
- Delivered to you or you pick it up;
- Measured in terms of either tons (and a ton is not much ballast) or cubic yards.
All have an effect the price as well as your geographic area and the quantity you want. Usually the delivery charge is as much or more than the material cost, especially if you are talking about a small amount. So if there is any way for you to pick it up yourself, try to do so.
Ballast always works best by applying a 'courser' layer first, then adding finer layers after the some compaction / settling time. That way the finer ballast works it way down into the courser layers. Also, use more of the courser ballast, in terms of quantity and lesser amounts of the finer layers as you build up the surface.
Lastly, if you are having it delivered, and the truck needs to cross your lawn or other existing concrete, ie your paved driveway, take precautions to not damage your lawn or driveway. Dump trucks with a reasonable load on them are heavy. Usually more than a 4" residential driveway is designed to support. You won't see the damage(s) right away, but in time you might be wondering where all the cracks came from.
Hope this helps,

A lot cheaper if you buy it in bulk rather than in bags even with delivery costs

gravel or gold? that will effect the cost. I think you mean gravel, it's cheaper, but it will take more.
