the only colour flags used in signal boxes red/yellow/green it must have been a dirty red flag which means stop

A Purple flag waved from a signal box would under normal circumstances mean "Danger" insofar as ANY flag WAVED means that, regardless of its colour. HOWEVER, being of a suspicious nature, could it not have been the signalman waving to his boyfriend?
