I am taking pre-natal vitamins while I am ttc. However, I don't know how good they are. Aren't they supposed to strengthen your hair & nails? How long until that occurs?

Also, have any of you ladies took additional vitamins while taking pre-natal? When I was just taking my typical daily multi-vitamin, I also took a calcicum suppulment. Can I do that now, along with the pre-natal?

Please don't respond "go ask the doctor" I will, when I go see him. I just wanted some personal expericene first..

I was told to only take my pre-natal because if you take a pre-natal plus another vitamin, you run the risk of getting too many vitamins, which can be worse than not getting enough. There is 100%+ of everything in most prenatals including iron--and I know for a fact that too much iron can be dangerous! So, in my opinion, just take the prenatal vitamin and nothing else unless your Dr. says to. Also, prenatals didn't really make my hair any better, but I did notice my nails grew really fast--remember that if you are preggers, than you baby is sucking up all the nutrients and vitamins you have and that's the purpose of the prenatal! As for the extra calcium, when I was preggers, I took two Tums nearly daily for upset stomach, which is calcium, and is perfectly safe during pregnancy--you might want to try that instead of a calcium pill. One "extra" I do recommend is a chewable vitamin C because it doesn't stay in the body (you pee it out!) and the C will give you some extra energy!

All the best, and if you have more Qs, message me.

I took extra calcium while I was pregnant and taking prenatal vitamins for all of my pregnancies. My doctor was aware of this and approved. Just don't take so much calcium that you are over 2000 mg every day, that would be too much. A regular calcium supplement in the recommended dose will be fine. You will get better absorption of the calcium if you don't take it at the same time of day as the prenatal. I never noticed a difference in my hair or nails while on the vitamins.

I was told by my OB to take an extra calcium pill with my prenatal vitamins, so it should be OK. You know, the hair and nail thing didn't seem to occur until I actually concieved-so I don't know how true it is or if it is a combination of the pregnancy hormones and the vitamins.

During my first trimester, I developed an extreme distaste for meat (and I usually love it). The texture of it made me nauseous, so I took an iron pill. Didn't have any problems.
I don't know that you would need a calcium supplement along with it, unless you have a problem consuming dairy products/calcium rich foods. Good luck!!
Oh-my hair and nails didn't really get any better until AFTER giving birth beause I continued the pills since I am breastfeeding. It takes a bit less out of your body than pregnancy, but not much!

Prenatal vitamins provide your body with boosts in nutrients such as follic acid and iron and calcium. These help maintain a healthy pregnancy. You should not need additional supplements for this. In fact too much calcium can cause acid reflux.

I would just take the prenatal and not take a multi vitamin or extra calcium.

Nobody has stated Dollar General or Family Dollar. They price $two.00 a bottle for 30 capsules. When I took the prescription pre-natal nutrients I used to be already pregnant. Now that I am looking to conceive once more I am taking the over the counter ones.

I took them for 2 months before we started trying. They didn't make my hair or nails any different though. You need extra folic acid in the prenatal vitamin. I had the pharmacist help me pick out the one with the right amount in it. Good luck!
