French gender is a constant headache for many students of French. There's just no simple logical way to knowing the gender of every noun other than just learning the gender with each word.

There are, however, some patterns in suffixes and word endings - certain endings tend to indicate masculine nouns, while other endings favor feminine nouns.

e.g. words ending with 'age' tend to be masculine, while those ending in 'ade' will usually be feminine. With all things, there are expecptions to every rule.

It should say in the dictionary when you look it up. If it's la - it's feminine, if it's le - it's masculine. If it has an extra e on the end it's feminine (like la brulée) However there's no rule of thumb to tell if something is masculine or feminine, you just have to learn it I'm afraid!

I think you just have to know, I mean if you were French you would have been taught since you were small; as you learn new French words you will learn their gender too. In the meantime buy a French dictionary and look them up!
