Could be either the card or the phone is damaged. Obviously the phone is not recognizing the card. You already know this.
The card is very similar to a CD (compact disk). It is just another form of digital storage media. And, just like the CD/DVD that is very delicate and fragile, phone cards are too.
I am certain you have had the card in and out several times. Is it possible for the card to be installed improperly? Check to make certain it is in correctly. Refer to your owners manual. I know what a drag. But they print those things for a reason.
If you have not already tried this, take the battery out and leave it out for five minutes or longer. Then re-install and try it. Sometimes electronics devices will 're-set' when power supply is not available. Similar to a 'cold-boot' on your computer.
If this does not work, take it to the phone store and ask them to check it out. And pay attention to what they are doing, and ask questions about how and why. It might just happen again.
Cell phones are more fragile than some people want to believe.
