I can't say for sure why each species of butterfly is colored like it is but there are some common reasons for animals to have the colors that they do. Three of the most common are to attract mates, to warn possible predators that they may be poisonous or distasteful and for camouflage (hiding). Some butterflies also use their colors to scare predators with a surprise flash of color that looks like large eyes or something else that might scare the predator. As to why these colorful patterns are beautiful, that's usually a matter of personal taste, I admit butterflies are one of my favorite things to draw in color.

Because we are seeing them this way !!! I see them like little flying flowers .
The idea of rebirth and second chances seems, to me, a natural connection to make with the "mariposa". Our terrestrial home is filled with tales of gods and men besting death to return to the mortal realm. Butterflies and moths have such distinct and visible phases to their lives that it is easy to believe each is its own creature instead of a natural evolution. Their masterful power of transformation might seem rooted in magic to the less pragmatic of our species. Humans who have to live with the weight of immutable mistakes often dream of a second chance at life. An image that represents a spiritual and physical "do over" might be compelling to some that have lived a colourful life. Perhaps even more so to those that feel they've missed out on their dreams and opportunities.

I'll give you two answers, you pick either (bonus for you for asking a great question!).
1. Because they are scary. See, we think they are pretty, all those colors and fluttery wings. But if we were the size of a butterfly (say, being a predator, etc), those flapping wings and bright colors and dots and spots ARE DOWNRIGHT TERRIFYING! And butterflies aren't good to eat anyway, but who wants their wing torn off and tasted, right?
And here's the 2nd answer:
2. They are beautiful because God (allah, jehovah, yaweh, buddha, etc) wants us to enjoy His (her?) creations.
or something like that!

Because butterfies do not fly, they flutter by. And it is this peculiar fluttering of its wings combined with the bright colours make them so beautiful. A butterfly is a Nature's gift for us to enjoy!

Butterflies are very good fliers. They have two pairs of large wings covered with colorful, iridescent scales in overlapping rows

Same reason that babies are cute, so we won't kill them. If butterflies were ugly then we would kill them and they wouldn't be able to provide the function they provide to nature. Why do you think roaches only come out at night? So we don't see how ugly they are and want to kill them.

because humans respond to combinations of colour, form and movement. Butterflies are delicate, colourful and move suddenly, we are programmed to find that intriguing
