That would depend upon what you were lubricating.
Neither of them is much use for a car engine, however, since margarine is a hydrocarbon, it would probably be more efficacious in most instances.
However, if (as I suspect) we are talking body parts, why not try baby oil?

Did you know that margarine is only one molecule away from being plastic?
I'm not what i'd rather use as a lubricant, Butter tastes nicer!!! I'd still rather use proper lubricant!!!

Butter is constant whereas margarine can be different mixtures of animal or vegetable fats and other ingredients. Use butter.

Stick butter, that way you dont get your hands messy when applying it to your cake pans.

health wise ky jelly, but cooking I would not use either, as butter burns ,Margarine bad fats, I personally use a rubbing of sunflour oil

Margarines are full of transfats ( deadly ), using a small amount of butter is far better.
