I am assuming you mean in dimensions such as 22" x 15". Because 5 gallons is well, 5 gallons.
Tanks can be different dimensions but still be 5 gallons Some are "Tall", therefore they have smaller dims. (think of taking five jugs of milk. (5 gallons) if you could stack them on top of each other, it is still 5 gallons. If you lay them side by side it is still 5 gallons.
If you are thinking of purchasing a fish tank, go to the store with a tape measure (or check some store's websites) That way you can make sure it fits in the space you want to put it.

Well, there is no average dimension set for a 5 gallon anymore (if there ever was?). Most companies their own unique 5 gallon tanks. The main reason for this is that most people who buy small tanks are in it for the "cute" factor; they just want a small tank with a fish or 2 and with little effort. The truth is that most of the time smaller tanks require more "effort" to maintain life in them. The smaller the eco-system, the touchier and more fragile it is. But back to your question. A semi-standard in the industry used to be a 5.5 gallon which was about 16"X8"X10" in, depending on the company making it. You should still be able to find them for sale, but a few companies have stopped making them and now the 10 gallon seems to be the smallest universal standard size (and cheapest). You should also be able to find accesories (tops, filters, and undergravel filters), just remember that with tops, different brands sometimes don't work with each other because of the plastic borders or braces being slightly different in size. Here is an address for tank dimensions for All-Glass Aquarium. www.all-glass.com/products/aquariums/index.html
I couldn't figure out how to hyperlink the text, but you can type it into your address bar. (remove any spaces)

I got a couple 5 1\2 gallon tanks from PetCo a couple years ago - seems that is the standard instead of just 5 gallon. They measure 16 inches long by 8 1\2 inches wide and 10 1\2 inches deep.

a gallon of milk is about 288 cubic inches, so 5 gallons would be about 1440 cubic inches. Assuming a standard width of 12 inches, you come up with 120 left over, so it'd be pretty small... A five gallon bucket is about 16 inches in diameter and 20 inches tall.... So visualize that.
I think thesmallest rectangular tank they make is a 20 gallon.

5 gallons is about is about 23 litres or 23000 cubic cm.
This would be a cube with each side a little below 1 foot or 30 cm.
For shapes other than cubes just multiply together the three dimensions in cm and it needs to come to about 23000.
