It can basically be taken as statistical fact that there is intelligent life elsewhere in the universe. The more we learn about the rest of the solar system and life itself, the more it seems like life may be a norm rather than an exception. The chances of us being visited by said intelligent lifeforms, however, is slim. I would refer to Drakes Equation, but that is actually deeply flawed and is based on some rather specious assumptions. However, it's still unlikely. Not impossible, but improbable.

I don't think we're alone, think about it, we are a tiny speck in a massive universe, we have to have neighbors out their somewhere : )
