How do you tell if a horse has a good dressage prospect?

What kinds of horses(beside fresians) do you think would look good in the dressage ring.

Warmbloods like Hanovarians, Trakehners etc excell in dressage, Andalusians and Lippizzaners do as well
Arabians do well too - but often at bigger shows they want to see bigger sized horses

Any breed can do fine in lower levels but to progress to the top levels a horse must be very athletic, able to extend and collect, must be very willing (not a fighter or puller like often seen in Jumpers)

Any horse has the potential to excell in dressage, but you need your horse to have very expressive paces, nice stright movement and preferably a good temperament, meaning that he should be keen to work and learn and work in partnership with his rider.

Warmbloods have then best temperament for the job, but a lot of thoroughbreds have proven themselves in the ring as champions.

If you have the commitment and the put in the time and effort with a horse that has nice paces, then you should succeed.

warmbloods are very popular for dressage, if you can see a horse running around in the pen, playing with the other horses, see how well he moves his legs, if he stretches them out, or if he piaffs (trots on the spot, or looks like hes trotting but hes not moving very fast) a good dressage horse will have smooth gaits, if you are albe to ride him, see how smooth his trot and canter are, the smoother the better, its hard to do the disipline on a "rough horse" (tryied dressage on my app/qh, he was some what smooth, but didnt have super long legs) i think an arabian would look great in dressage competitions, but im not sure how well their tiny bones would handle it.. so maybe a arab crossed with andalusian or hanovarian... hope this helps!

warm bloods and thoroughbreds do great in dressage. Arabians can also do well. Look for a horse with nice, big, grace full movements. The horse must also respond well to your aids.
