RF stands for Representative Fraction and used in maps to indicate the scale of the map.

Map scale is a statement of a measure on the map and the
equivalent measure on the Earth’s surface. To show a portion of
the Earth’s surface on a map, the area must be reduced.
Map scale, or the extent of reduction, is expressed as a ratio. The
number on the left indicates distance on the map; the number on
the right indicates distance on the ground. The following three
statements show the same scale:
1 inch = 2,000 feet
1 inch = 24,000 inch
1:24,000
The later is known as a representative fraction (RF) because
the amounts on either side of the colon are equivalent; that is,
1:24,000 means 1 inch equals 24,000 inch or 2000 feet

the scales are given to us in the form of (eg) cm into km but in RF (ratio formula) we have our measurements in cm:cm
and it always in its lowest form and it is always i centimeters(cm) not in any other unit.

foe example..

what is the RF of the scale..

4cm to 40km

so 40 km into cm
40* 1000
40000

4cm :40000cm

now u want the lowest form

40000/4
=10000

ur RF is 1:10000

u never write the units in a RF.
