First of all, if you are looking for help for a philosophy assignment on Yahoo Answers, I'm not very optimistic about your grades. There must be a million websites out there which will give you better and more detailed answers.

To return to your question, emptiness is a void in space, an absence of presence, a place which is not filled with material. It is a place as well as a state - a state of being unfilled. But it is also a frame of mind, because you can think of emptiness either as 'something not being there' or 'nothing being there'. A place is empty if there is absence of matter there or it is filled with the substance we call 'nothing'. So I would say, emptiness is all three, a place, a state, as well as a frame of mind.

The question relates to feelings, and feelings are emotions that are triggered in the mind (relating brain to the mind). Literally speaking, the bridge only links to points or places or banks. It does not occupy all the space between the two points. There is the emptyness under and above.

Apply this to two individuals, two groups, two peoples, that were once together (inseparable or as one) but seperated as a result of bitterness or for any other reason, for a period of time. When a successful attempt is made to bring the two together, as one could say bridge the gap, a hollow sensation is felt by the two as a result of the separation - a sense of emptiness.

Apply this to a breakable material. You may be able to join them back one way or other, but, the crack remains (the emptiness).
Its either a 'whole' that is acceptable or 'nothing' at all. Ultimately, just a frame of mind!

Let me present you with something that shows mathematics and philosophy are linked in some way or the other.

Sierpinski's triangle is a simple way to show that no matter how much substance you put into/create/make, there will still be emptiness. Try the link below.

You will see that you can go on and on with the triangles, but there will always be emptiness. The more you put the triangles, the closer you get to infinity, and the closer will the area get to zero, or emptiness.

So emptiness remains, no matter what you try to build, make, or destroy.

Emptiness is the absence of something to look forward to. It´s a frame of mind.

You need to do serious ZEN studies instead.

"What is emptiness?"

Yeah, right.

"What's the sound of one hand clapping"

Sheesh....
